While everyone is at home with family more often, there are countless opportunities to teach your children basic new life skills.

Teaching your kids to tidy up their personal spaces is a great way to break up the monotony and develop independence and responsibility. But household cleaners can be hard to find right now and can contain harsh chemicals that are dangerous for little helpers. Luckily, it’s easy (and fun) to make natural bathroom cleaners from household ingredients, so your kids can pitch in on chores and clean without chemicals. And with this cleaning hack, kids can personalize their solutions with fun spray bottles and favorite essential oil scents, so cleaning seems less like a chore and more like a game! The bathroom is a great place to start because there’s so much to clean and fewer hazards than the kitchen. So, grab your ingredients and get started!

All-Natural Window and Mirror Spray

This window and mirror spray with cornstarch (yep, cornstarch!) will give you shiny, streak-free mirrors without any of the chemicals at a fraction of the price! Why cornstarch? Because cornstarch particles are very small and act as an abrasive cleaner at an atomic level, removing small particles and leaving behind a glossy, streak-free shine.

You'll need:

  • 1 kids’ spray bottle
  • Sparkle® Paper Towels
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 – 10 drops of pure essential oil of choice (optional)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in the spray bottle. Shake well to fully mix in the cornstarch. It’s important to shake this mixture before each use to mix the cornstarch particles with the liquid. Spray onto mirror or window and wipe clean with a paper towel.

Homemade All-Purpose Spray

Nothing’s more essential in a cleaning kit than all-purpose spray. This recipe is simple and uses baking soda and vinegar to effectively clean anything from toilets to bathroom sinks and showers. Note: This is not a substitute for labeled disinfectant.

You'll need:

  • 1 kids’ spray bottle
  • Sparkle® Paper Towels
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 2 cups water
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon or 8 – 10 drops of pure essential oil of choice (optional)

Directions:

Pour the water and vinegar into the spray bottle—don’t add the baking soda in this step or it will overflow. Add the baking soda to the water/vinegar mixture and shake the bottle to combine all the ingredients well. Add the lemon juice or your favorite essential oil for a refreshing scent. Spray on countertops, tile or any hard surface that needs cleaning.

Essential Oil Air Freshener

Keep things smelling fresh between cleanings with this all-natural DIY air freshener. It’s perfect for bathrooms or anywhere else you need a burst of freshness, and kids will love picking out their favorite essential oil scent to transform their space.

You'll need:

  • 1 kids’ spray bottle
  • 12 – 15 drops of pure essential oil of choice
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Directions:

Combine vinegar, water and essential oils in a spray bottle. Shake to mix the ingredients well. Shake before each use and spritz in any room that needs freshening! If you want a stronger scent, add a few more drops of your favorite essential oil.
